Brits choosing to emigrate to Australia

Australia is the most popular country for emigrating Britons, according to new figures released by the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Those who chose not to move to Australia selected Spain and then New Zealand as their destinations of choice.

Official figures for 2007 show a decline in the number of people from Britain emigrating to Australia and other countries. In 2006, 400,000 people left the UK to move to Australia, Spain, New Zealand and other places. By 2007, this number had fallen to 340,000.

Experts believe emigration to Australia and other countries from the UK will start to rise in 2008 and 2009 as the recession takes hold. Certainly the UK's appeal as a country seems to have waned if immigration figures are any indication. Home Office figures show the number of people from east European countries registering for work in the UK this year has declined. There were 21,000 fewer such registrations between July and September, compared with the same period in 2007.

Australia's recent decision to issue a tax rebate to its citizens will no doubt continue to ensure its popularity as an emigration destination, as will its reputation for a high standard of living and year-round sunshine.
